POST ANESTHESIA CARE UNIT & SURGICAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT
When surgery patients leave one of the 14 operating rooms at IRMC, the next step in their recovery is either a period of time in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), or a direct transfer to the Critical Care Unit. As the number of surgeries at our medical center has grown and the acuity of the patients has increased with the addition of The Heart Center, the current spaces have become inadequate in the number of beds available. Simply stated, the demand for surgery has greatly exceeded IRMC's capacity for recovery space.
Click below for an informational video describing the PACU/SICU and the need for expansion.
New 27-Bed Post Anesthesia Care Unit (Recovery Room)
With demand growing for all types of surgical procedures at IRMC, the recovery room is extremely undersized for the volume of surgeries currently performed at the medical center. Its limitations, at times, cause surgeries to be delayed if it is determined that a recovery room bed will not be available when needed. The current PACU has only nine beds; the new unit will have 27 beds.
New 14-Bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit
A new 14-bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit, intended for the north side of the facility next to The Heart Center, is vital to serving the ever-increasing needs of cardiovascular surgery, vascular surgery and neurosurgery patients. This new unit will fully complete The Heart Center project.
As a Beacon Award winner, the caliber of Critical Care at our medical center is rated among the highest in the nation. Our specially trained and certified critical care nurses have been honored as the "Best Nursing Team in Florida." Medical Director Dr. George Mitchell has further enhanced Critical Care by instituting a program of multidisciplinary rounds, something that is very rare for a community hospital and has been particularly impressive to Duke.
