Cancer patients experience the best of care at Indian River Medical Center's inpatient oncology wing, the first phase of the Scully-Welsh Cancer Center. The fully renovated fifth-floor unit opened in April 2015 and features 14 spacious, private rooms with large windows and en-suite baths. Funded by the Campaign for Excellence in Cancer Care, the wing is located on 5 North in the main hospital building. Patients and their loved ones have praised the suites featuring couches that convert to beds so family members can offer round-the-clock comfort and support. Each room has a work station enabling nurses to mix medications at the bedside.
"When nurses don’t have to leave the room to retrieve medicine, they have more time to spend with patients," said Lori McCormick, IRMC's director of oncology services.
