A lot can change in 23 years. Models of care, equipment and aesthetics changed significantly since 1997 – which was the last time Indian River’s women’s and maternal health unit was modernized.
The goal of the Foundation’s Mother-Baby Campaign is to elevate the environment of care within the women’s health unit to match the outstanding quality of care the team delivers every day. View our stellar patient outcomes.
Our goal: $12.25 million. If we reach $6 million by May 2020, we can begin Phase 1 this summer. Make a gift now to help reach our goal.
Our caregivers have built one of the safest obstetrical, gynecological and infant service lines in the state of Florida. By upgrading our facility while continuing current best practices, we ensure the highest levels of patient safety and quality of care.
2,600 ER / Triage / Outpatient Visits
Labor and Delivery provides mmergency care for expectant mothers -- routine and high-risk obstetrical patients transported directly from the ER to women’s healthcare. Two large triage rooms with four beds give limited privacy. As the emergency room for pregnant patients, this is where minutes matter and seconds count.
Each year, our team delivers 1,100 babies, including several sets of twins. A dedicated Operating Room is used only for Cesarean deliveries. Six large labor rooms meet basic guidelines established by regulating agencies but are extremely dated in appearance and, more importantly, need leading-edge technology.
We practice couplet care: keeping mother and baby together, an evidence-based practice proven to increase bonding. Parents and family are encouraged to join mom and newborn, but our 22-year old rooms aren't welcoming to overnight guests or families. 15 post-partum rooms desperately need to be enlarged and reconfigured.
Our Level I Nursery is staffed with board certified, trained pediatric hospitalists from Nemours Children Hospital -- on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. They provide normal newborn care and assist in all-too-frequent emergencies. Our team is trained, prepared and experienced in in dealing with the unexpected.
Gynecological Surgery Patients
Post surgical patients receive care in our post-partum unit following gynecological procedures. Our nurses are purposely cross-trained with six specialized certifications so they are skilled in caring for all women, from new moms to grandmothers.
