The first million-dollar gift to Indian River Medical Center Foundation came from the late R. Champlin "Champ" Sheridan and his wife Debbie. Initially choosing anonymity, Champ agreed to be identified in the fervent hope other donors would follow their lead. He would be extremely gratified to know the degree to which that decision changed the future of philanthropy in our community.
And the gift, as always intended, changed the lives of thousands of IRMC patients as well. The Sheridan gift allowed IRMC to build a 14-bed surgical intensive care unit (SICU) immediately adjacent to the Welsh Heart Center. Meeting the very special needs of cardovascular, vascular and neurosurgy patients, this state-of-the-art unit is led by Critical Care medical Director Dr. George Mitchell.
The Sheridan Intensive Care unit set the tone for future construction projects with wide corridors, spacious private en suite rooms, brightened by large windows that offer healing views, and always a welcome place for loved ones to provide comfort.
