Groundbreaking Scully-Welsh Cancer Center

Scully-Welsh Cancer Center Underway

The first celebratory shovels of soil were turned April 23, 2014 to break ground for the new Scully-Welsh Cancer Center, the hub of Indian River Medical Center’s Duke-affiliated cancer care program. Opening in November 2015, the 34,000 square-foot Scully-Welsh Cancer Center will house radiation therapy, chemotherapy, clinical trial coordination, genetic counseling services, education, a resource library and care coordination, including patient navigators.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, Marlynn, Bill and Pat shared their enthusiasm and personal motivation for supporting the project, urging others to join them in bringing The Campaign for Excellence in Cancer Care to a successful close. To date, the Foundation has reached 74 percent of its $48 million goal, with $12.5 million remaining.

One very special element of the cancer program’s patient support services is the John W. Scully Volunteer Program, named for Bill’s brother, the late husband of Sue Scully. The program will pair volunteers who are cancer survivors, or former caregivers, with patients diagnosed with the same cancer as the volunteers experienced. During the groundbreaking ceremony, John’s memory was honored when Medical Center CEO Jeff Susi announced the program and presented Sue with a commemorative gift.

Additional cancer care enhancements will include high-tech oncology surgical operating rooms and renovation of the oncology inpatient wing of private suites in the main hospital, also to open in 2015.
