Welcome to Indian River Medical Center Foundation

Friends Give $24 Million for Cancer Care

Scully FullThe more Mr. and Mrs. Scully learned of the hospital's plan for cancer care, the more urgent they realized this plan was – and they knew they could help get the program running so it could begin serving patients and families.

Their generous $12 million gift was soon matched by close friends, Pat and Carol Welsh, leading to the establishment of the Scully-Welsh Cancer Center, an affiliate of Duke Medicine.

With the $24 million contribution, the Campaign for Excellence in Cancer Care exceeded its original $30 million goal, propelling the Indian River Medical Center Foundation to increase its goal to $48 million to allow for a dramatic expansion in clinical trials for patients who need treatments beyond standard protocol, for two new operating suites and renovation of oncology inpatient rooms, and for other diagnostic and treatment capabilities.

"We're pleased to invest in the addition of vital clinical services to meet the healthcare needs of this unique community," says Mr. Welsh. "We are very happy with the progress we’ve seen at IRMC in the past 10 years and are glad to contribute when we can make a difference. It’s our strong hope that others will join us by investing in IRMC as it continually raises the bar in patient care."

The gifts by Mr. and Mrs. Scully and Mr. and Mrs. Welsh, along with the many other donations to the campaign, allow for the immediate design and construction of a new facility on the IRMC campus, which will be dedicated to the care of cancer patients.

In addition to providing treatments such as radiation oncology and chemotherapy, the new center will house the IRMC cancer care coordination team and offer another level of service to patients and their families. With a patient resource library, a multimedia conference center, a location for support groups and a healing garden, the new Scully-Welsh Cancer Center will also provide opportunities for major advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment technology.

"While every aspect of the program is critical for the care of cancer patients and their families," says Mr. Scully, "we are most excited to know that our support will attract the best and brightest in clinical talent, allowing patients in our community to have access to thousands of clinical trials right here in Vero Beach."

We rise by lifting others...
